7 Things I’d Want for an Autumn Rooftop Tent Road Trip Through the Alps

Autumn is my favourite season for driving in the Alps: golden larches above the Salzkammergut lakes and quieter passes in the Hohe Tauern and Tyrol. I have been planning a rooftop tent road trip for these weeks, so I looked through the range at TOPOAK to see what a setup for cold nights, rain and short days would need.

These are researched picks. I read the product pages, spec sheets and shop policies; I have not slept in any of these tents. For each piece I note why it made my list and one honest drawback.

Rooftop tent road trip basics: roof load, crossbars and weight

Before choosing any tent, I would start with the car. TOPOAK‘s rooftop tent compatibility guide explains that the figure that matters while driving is the dynamic roof load; the static load applies when you are parked and sleeping. You will find your car’s dynamic roof load in its handbook.

The RTT crossbars guide says the crossbars should be at least 30 inches (about 76 cm) apart and rated for at least the weight of the tent. The installation guide gives a spacing range of 30 to 60 inches.

The weight on the roof is the real trade-off. A tent of 50 kg or more changes how a car handles on hairpin bends and, in my view, you should expect higher fuel consumption from the extra weight and wind resistance.

Where you can sleep in Austria

Wild camping is restricted in most of Austria. The official government portal oesterreich.gv.at states that camping in the forest is expressly prohibited unless the forest owner has given consent. Outside forests, the rules are not uniform: they are set mainly by the individual federal states, and municipalities can add their own ordinances. I will book campsites or official pitches for every night, and check opening dates, as some close in autumn.

1. Galaxy Light | Rooftop Tent RTT

Why it made the list: it is the slim, lighter hard shell in TOPOAK‘s range. The product page lists a net weight of 50 kg for the 51-inch version and 62 kg for the 56-inch version, a closed height of 4.9 inches (about 12.5 cm), 300gsm poly-cotton canvas with an anti-condensation coating, and a 10,000 mm waterproof rating. It fits two adults. If you need room for a child as well, the Galaxy Pro weighs 75 kg and has a 3-inch memory foam mattress.

Honest drawback: the price, and the thin 1⅝-inch foam mattress, which is why I would add item 3 for cold nights. Like any canvas tent, it also needs to dry out properly after rain before it stays closed for long.

2. Thermal Insulation Liner

Why it made the list: cold October nights. The Thermal Insulation Liner is a fitted extra layer with zippered access to the windows, doors and sky panels. TOPOAK sells versions for the Galaxy Light, Galaxy Pro, Stellar, Vision, Galaxy and Nebula, and describes it as suited to cold-weather trips.

Honest drawback: it is another purchase on top of the tent, and the page gives no temperature rating, so I would still pack a proper warm sleeping bag.

3. Air & Foam Camping Mattress

Why it made the list: comfort on long trips. TOPOAK describes the Air & Foam Camping Mattress as an inflatable comfort upgrade with adjustable support, in sizes for the 56-inch tents, the Galaxy Light 51-inch and both Vision widths.

Honest drawback: it needs inflating, so you either buy the version bundled with the electric air blower or bring your own pump, which means one more thing to charge.

4. 270-degree Awning

Why it made the list: in rain, an awning turns the side of the car into a dry kitchen and sitting area. The 270-degree Awning uses 180gsm waterproof polyester ripstop with a blackout coating and comes for the left or right side. The lighter alternative is the 180-degree Awning, which weighs 24.5 kg and covers 100 square feet.

Honest drawback: weight. The 83-inch version weighs 29 kg and the 98-inch version 33.7 kg, and that adds to the tent on your roof. A wet awning also has to be opened and dried at home.

5. Car Shower Tent

Why it made the list: privacy for changing and washing at a pitch. The Car Shower Tent is made from 420D ripstop Oxford fabric and folds down to 43 inches long.

Honest drawback: it weighs 14 kg, and if your campsites have showers, it is a comfort rather than a necessity.

6. Foldable Camping Table

Why it made the list: a stable surface for breakfast. The Foldable Camping Table has a 6061 aluminium frame and a water-resistant top, and weighs 1.55 kg. For sitting, the Ultralight Camping Chair weighs 2.3 kg and offers several seating positions.

Honest drawback: the table stands 20.5 inches (about 52 cm) high when open, which suits low camping chairs but not cooking while standing.

7. Magnetic Rechargeable LED Light

Why it made the list: short days. In late October it gets dark early in the mountain valleys, and the Magnetic Rechargeable LED Light gives 300 lumens, five modes, a remote control, USB Type-C charging and, according to TOPOAK, up to 25 hours of runtime.

Honest drawback: the magnets need a metal surface, and you have to remember to charge it between campsites.

Good to know

  • Price range: From $49.00 (table, LED light) to $1,818.00 (Galaxy Pro), in US dollars as shown on the TOPOAK site.
  • Where to buy: TOPOAK’s online shop.
  • Shipping to Austria/EU: TOPOAK‘s shipping policy lists free shipping to EU countries, about two weeks for most destinations. Tents are oversized and may come by freight with a delivery appointment. TOPOAK says it covers import duties for listed regions under standard delivery; taxes are shown at checkout.
  • Returns: Within 30 days of receipt, unused and in the condition received; you pay return shipping if you change your mind, so keep the original packaging (return policy).
  • Warranty: 3-year limited warranty on a tent’s main structure, lifetime on the gas struts, 1 year on included accessories, 2 years on the 270-degree awning’s structure and on the mattress (warranty policy).

Prices and availability may change.

My takeaway

  1. Look up your car’s dynamic roof load and your crossbars’ rating first, then pick the tent.
  2. For autumn, combine a light tent with the liner and a thicker mattress rather than buying the biggest shell.
  3. Add an awning only if your roof load allows the extra weight.
  4. Book campsites or official pitches for every night.
  5. Plan time at home to dry the tent and awning after rainy days.

Prices and availability may change, so check the product pages before you order.
