After weeks on the road, I want my flat to feel warm and restful again, and dark enough to sleep off jet lag in the afternoon. So I looked into custom curtains for autumn and made-to-measure shades at Homerilla, reading the product pages, measuring guides and policies.

One thing to know first: Homerilla‘s shipping page names the United States and Canada as its primary service areas and asks customers in other countries to contact customer service. I could not confirm delivery to Austria or the EU, so please ask Homerilla directly before you plan around these ideas.

1. Blackout curtains for sleeping after long-haul flights

Why it made the list: after a night flight, I want a properly dark bedroom at two in the afternoon. The Harmonia | Total Darkness Blackout & Soundproof Curtains are 100% polyester at 420 gsm, and Homerilla describes them as blackout and soundproof. The Seren Chenille Blackout Curtains are heavier at 493 gsm, and Homerilla says they reach up to 90% blackout without lining.

Honest drawback: both are polyester rather than a natural fibre, and the soundproofing is the brand’s description, with no test figures on the page.

2. Wool-blend jacquard curtains for warmth

Why it made the list: heavier fabric makes a room feel cosier once the heating goes on. The Cecile Wool Curtains are a 275 to 375 gsm jacquard, which Homerilla says reaches up to 80% blackout without lining. For a softer, velvety look, there are also the Simon Chenille Blackout Curtains.

Honest drawback: despite the name, the Cecile fabric is 5% wool, 5% cotton and 90% polyester, and panels are limited to 110 inches (about 279 cm) in length.

3. Linen-look curtains for a natural feel

Why it made the list: in my living room I prefer the relaxed texture of linen. The Villa Linen Blackout Curtains are 30% linen and 70% polyester at 360 gsm.

Honest drawback: this is a blend, not pure linen, and colours like grey-blue can look different on screen than in daylight. Homerilla sells fabric sample books, which I would order first.

4. Cellular shades for insulation

Why it made the list: older Viennese windows can feel draughty. The Nava Top-Down Bottom-Up Cellular Shades open from the top, the bottom or both. Homerilla claims the honeycomb structure traps air, reducing heat loss in winter, and that it helps save energy; the page gives no figures, so I read that as a general description.

Honest drawback: for an inside mount, the window frame must be at least 2½ inches (about 6.4 cm) deep, and the look is cooler than fabric curtains, so I would pair them with curtains.

5. Motorised roller shades

Why it made the list: convenience on dark mornings. The Ezio No-Drill Custom Blackout Roller Shades install without drilling, come with manual or motorised operation, and use a fabric Homerilla describes as total blackout.

Honest drawback: like everything here, they are made to your measurements, so a measuring mistake is costly to fix. For one cosy extra underfoot, I also liked the Remo Custom Wool Rugs, which are made to size as well.

Measuring up: custom curtains for autumn, step by step

Homerilla‘s curtain measurement guideline recommends these steps:

  1. Decide where the rod goes: usually 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) above the window frame, extending 6 to 15 inches (15 to 38 cm) beyond each side.
  2. Measure the rod or track length with a steel tape measure.
  3. For pleated headers, fullness is already built in; Homerilla suggests adding about 20 inches (51 cm) to the total rod length, so a 100-inch rod with two panels needs panels 60 inches wide each.
  4. For soft top or grommet headers, multiply the rod length by 2 for fullness and divide by the number of panels.
  5. Choose your finished length (1 inch above the floor, a break on the floor or a slight puddle) and measure every window separately.

For shades, the shades measuring guide recommends measuring width and height in three places.

Production time and returns

Homerilla‘s shipping page gives a lead time for customised drapes of 10 to 16 business days: 6 to 9 for production and 5 to 7 for shipping, rising to 15 to 28 in the holiday season.

Under the return and refund policy, requests must be made within 30 days of delivery. Faults on Homerilla‘s side lead to a remake, adjustment or replacement. If you dislike the fabric, a remake may involve a remanufacturing fee, and if your own measurements were wrong, the team works out an adjustment with you. Buyers pay return shipping for their own mistakes, and the return address is in New Jersey, USA.

Good to know

  • Price range: Starting prices from $69.99 to $129.99 per panel in US dollars, as shown on the Homerilla site; the final price depends on your size and options.
  • Where to buy: Homerilla’s online shop.
  • Shipping to Austria/EU: Not confirmed. Homerilla‘s shipping page names the United States and Canada as its primary service areas and asks customers in other countries to contact support@homerilla.com.
  • Lead time: 10 to 16 business days for customised drapes (15 to 28 in the holiday season).
  • Returns: Requests within 30 days of delivery. Custom items are remade, adjusted or replaced rather than simply refunded; fabric changes may carry a remanufacturing fee, and you pay return shipping for your own mistakes.

Prices and availability may change.

My takeaway

  1. Order fabric samples before anything else.
  2. Measure twice, following Homerilla‘s guide, and write every number down.
  3. Allow two to three weeks for production and shipping.
  4. Confirm delivery to your country with Homerilla before ordering from Europe.

Prices and availability may change, so check the product pages before you order.
