Got home a little early today. They sent us all home because the U received a bomb threat. I wonder how many bomb threats there are at campuses across the U.S.? We just had one at the U last April or so and now this one. I really don’t recall there being before this for a very long time. There was the time a bunch of animal activists broke into one of the vet med buildings and tried to start a fire but it didn’t take. They ended up just making a big mess. Now all the vet med buildings have metal detectors at entryways. I really don’t think anything will come of this bomb threat. Rarely do they. There weren’t any police or firemen on the west bank when I left and I took my sweet time getting out of there. I was the last one to leave in my area. Really if whoever called in the bomb threat wanted to disrupt school you think they would have done it last week when it was mid-terms. Oh well.
This reminds me of the time (flashback sequence) when I was living in England and going to school there. There was a bomb threat on campus or in town at least once a month. Back then, it was the IRA doing all the disruption. They don’t really do that sort of thing anymore - don’t want to be associated with the terrorists of today. So, the student guild was the place that had the most bomb threats. I remember so many times following the evacuation routes in that building. The nice boys of Duran Duran went to school there and had donated a bunch of money to the student guild so there was this Duran Duran pool room and bar in the basement where I spent a lot of time slugging down pints between classes. One October day we were hurried out of there because of a bomb threat. It was false so we went back in. There were many more bomb threats to come throughout the school year. But, apparently on the one year aniversary of that specific bomb threat (I had left by that time and was Stateside again) there was another and there was an actual bomb that did go off. I think a couple of people were killed and the Duran Duran pool room and bar was completely destroyed. I think people were so accustomed to bomb threats by that time that they didn’t take it seriously and a lot of people got hurt. I hope it doesn’t get to that point here now. But I guess that would have been me that would have nipped it today if there were an actual bomb because I was so pokey getting out of the building. Next time I will be better.
