We started the day with service since it’s Sunday – Gospel Sunday. That was wild. I’ve never been to a Southern Christian church service before. Very lively and they were thrilled to have us. I took some video of the service. Before Hurricane Katrina this church had 580 members. Now there are just a handful. The church members are still scattered about throughout Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas and wherever else they can stay. The pastor, Rev. Lance Eden is only 26 years old. He became pastor of this church 3 months before Hurricane Katrina. After the hurricane hit the Methodist diocese said he could relocate to a Children’s home near Shreveport. He decided to stay. He is a very strong man. The members that are here follow him and his word closely. It’s amazing. It’s very clear his purpose is here, to help rebuild.

This afternoon we went out and picked up trash in the neighborhood around the church. I completely underestimated the labor involved in picking up trash. It was a mountain to tackle and we only scratched the surface. It wiped me out. But what was incredibly heartening was a few people drove by and stopped and said “God Bless” “Thank You for coming and helping”. That helped us go a little bit further in cleaning up. Did I mention it’s like a third world country here? It’s still all soaking in.
